The Nigerian Red Cross Society, in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has commenced the distribution of cash and relief materials to 1,900 displaced households across six local government areas of Benue State.

The intervention, tagged the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) Population Movement Project, targets households displaced by recent communal clashes and armed attacks in Guma, Gwer West, Otukpo, Agatu, Apa, and Gwer East LGAs.

National Communication and Advocacy Adviser of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Victor Achigbulu, during the flag off of the distribution at NKST Primary School, Naka, in Gwer West LGA, said the initiative forms part of the Red Cross’s humanitarian mission to assist crisis-affected communities.

Achigbulu, who represented his National President and Secretary-General, explained that each household would receive N100,000 cash assistance and essential non-food items such as kitchen sets, mats, blankets, mosquito nets, jerrycans, and water purification tablets (Aquatabs).

He said the support would help victims rebuild their lives and maintain healthy living conditions in temporary shelters.

The IFRC Surge Field Coordinator, Abdullahi Fye, also explained that the intervention followed requests from the Nigerian Red Cross to support victims displaced by herder and banditry attacks between June and July.
