NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Eugene Juwah, who spoke at the 10th anniversary of the Telecom Consumer Parliament (TCP) in Lagos, stressed the need to increase the level of broadband penetration in the country.
This, according to him, informed the framework to support broadband infrastructure which has been fully articulated and is being implemented by the commission as reflected in the Open Access Model.
He said: “The recent successful auctioning of one slot of 30 MHz bandwidth in the 2.3GHz spectrum in February this year is a step towards the successful roll-out of broadband services through the Open Access framework in Nigeria.”
Juwah who highlighted some of the challenges hindering the provision of broadband infrastructure such as issues of right of way, multiple regulations, multiple taxation, vandalism, and security challenges noted that government is committed to compelling and regulating operators such that consumers have values for their money.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Communication Technology, Omobola Johnson said government has been working tirelessly to increase the penetration of internet across the country.
Johnson who was represented by Engineer Festus Daudu, Director, Spectrum Management in the ministry, charged telecom consumers on useful suggestions capable of assisting government and the Commission in policy direction and regulatory framework to serve the public better.
Meanwhile, consumers present at the 10th TCP expressed dissatisfaction over the poor quality of services across all networks in the country.
