2,613 Lagos women accessed N2.1bn entrepreneurial funds – Ambode

The Lagos State governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, has revealed that a total of 2,613 women in the state have been able to access N2.1 billion from the state’s Employment Trust Funds.

 Ambode disclosed this at the 17th national summit of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) held in Lagos.

 According to the Lagos State governor, his administration understands the importance of women in the development of the state and as such gives priority to their empowerment, especially in the areas of entrepreneurship and small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs).

 "We have, through the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, funded many female-run medium and small scale businesses. I can tell you that by September 2017, 2,613 female entrepreneurs had received a cumulative sum of N2.1bn, 42 per cent of the total loans disbursed. But our target is to ensure that, at least, 60 per cent of the loans are given to women," the governor said.

  Ambode further called on more women to approach the Trust Fund and take advantage of its many initiatives.

 Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, the wife of the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, also urged women to start speaking out against rape and other social vices against children maltreatment. 

  Similarly, the wife of the Lagos State governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode, called on the women to speak against the menace of female genital mutilation, starting from their homes and communities.

 Also at the event were governors of Akwa Ibom, Mr Udom Emannuel; Bayelsa, Seriake Dickson; Edo, Godwin Obaseki and Ekiti, Ayo Fayose.
