The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects allegedly involved in the brutal murder of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, disclosed this in a statement in Awka on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
Ikenga stated, “The police command in Anambra, leveraging on the assistance of the Umueri village, Ogbunike community members, on July 25, 2025, arrested one female suspect, Somtochukwu Nwafor, aged 24 years.”
“The arrest is in connection with the gruesome murder of a pregnant nurse, whose mutilated body was recently discovered in a soakaway pit at Ogbunike, Oyi LGA of Anambra.”
During interrogation, Nwafor confessed to being the girlfriend of the prime suspect, Chiemerie Elobisi, who is from the same village but is currently at large. She told the police that Elobisi called her to clean up bloodstains after the victim was murdered.
The PPRO further revealed that Nwafor disclosed how they sold the body parts to various native doctors in the area. Preliminary information suggests the victim, a trained nurse, was lured to Elobisi’s house under the pretense of seeking medication.
Following information from the suspect, operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), in the early hours of July 29, 2025, raided the shrine of an identified native doctor, Nwafor Ofornwatadile, from Itima Amawa Village, Ogbunike. They recovered suspected human body parts concealed in cellophane bags.
The command has launched a manhunt for the prime suspect, along with anyone suspected of receiving human parts or collaborating in the crime.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police (CP) in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the heinous act, describing it as inhumane, criminal, and an affront to public morality and the sanctity of life. The CP appealed to the public to provide any useful information regarding the matter and assured that informants’ identities would be protected.
