The police in Ogun State have arrested two alleged members of the Eiye cult group for allegedly unleashing terror on some communities in the Ogijo area of the state.

The suspects were alleged to be working for a yet-to-be-identified land grabber to unleash attacks on the communities’ residents.

The suspects – Oladayo Bello, 34, and 40-year-old Awobajo Muritala – were apprehended following information received by the Divisional Police Officer, Ogijo division, Chief Superintendent Muhammed S. Baba that some members of the unlawful Eiye cult were gathering at the Kanniyi area of Shimmawa, from where they intended to attack some communities within the area.

A statement by the Ogun State Police Command’s spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, yesterday said that following the report, Baba led operatives to the scene, where they saw no fewer than 20 members of the group with various types of dangerous weapons.

Oyeyemi said the suspected cultists, on sighting the police, opened fire on the operatives and ran into various directions in a bid to escape.

He said, “The operatives chased and apprehended two among them. Recovered from the arrested persons are two cut-to-size guns, five live cartridges, two expended cartridges, one battle axe, assorted criminal charms and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.”

Oyeyemi said the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.

“The Commissioner equally ordered that the fleeing members of the group be hunted and brought to book. The CP warned land grabbers to stay away from the state as he would not hesitate to deal decisively with anybody trying to disturb the peace of the state under any guise,” he said.
