The Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, has freed two inmates from the Oko Correctional Centre in the state.
The freed inmates, Shaibu Adams and Musa Ibrahim, have been in detention close to two years without appearing in court after their first appearance.
One of the freed inmates, Adams (27), from Akwa Ibom, was charged with kidnapping and remanded on July 3, 2023.
But he spent one year, 10 months and 10 days without being taken to court after his initial remand order.

The police charged Adams with kidnapping, while the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in the state charged him with stealing a cell phone.
Adams, who spoke to the Administration of Criminal Justice Ministry Monitoring Committee (ACJMC) during the CJ’s visit to the centre, said he was arrested on his way from work.
Justice Okungbowa ruled that Adams had spent more time than he would have, if convicted and subsequently discharged and freed him.
