Justice Joyce Abdulmaleek of the Federal High Court Ibadan, has sentenced two drug traffickers to 18 years in prison for unlawfully transporting 936 kg of Indian hemp. The convicts are Jacob Ilesanmi and Semiu Bamigbose both adults. She said they were convicted based on the evidence before her and the plea of guilt by the duo.

She said, “In view of the diabolical effect of smoking the weed substance in the society, as well as the upsurge in the sale, Ilesanmi is sentenced to nine years in prison from the date of his arrest. Bamgbose is also sentenced to nine years in prison from the date of his arrest. The punishment is to serve as deterrent to others.”

Earlier, Mr Raphael Himinkaiye, counsel to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Oyo State Command, had said the convicts were apprehended in a white Ford vehicle fully loaded with no fewer than 936kg of the illicit drug.

The convicts told the court that they were not aware of the consequences of their involvement in the crime. They said that all efforts made to get the baron who sent them were unsuccessful.
