Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, has sentenced two drug traffickers – Femi Oloye and Ayomide Oladiti – to five months imprisonment for dealing in 1.3 kilogrammes of Indian hemp.

Justice Ayo-Emmanuel said he was convicting Oloye and Oladiti based on the evidence before him.

“I have considered the fact that Oloye and Oladiti are first-time offenders and have not wasted the time of the court in this case. 

Therefore, Oloye is sentenced to two months imprisonment and Oladiti to three months imprisonment. The sentences start from the date they were first arrested,”  the judge said.

The defence counsel, Mr Musbau Olapade, had pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing his clients.

“I want to beg my lord to give my clients minimum sentences because their dependents will suffer greatly in their absence. Oloye and Oladiti are married with wives and children. Surely, the duo would have learnt their bitter lessons after serving their jail terms,” Olapade stated.

The two men were taken to court by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Oyo State Command, on a one-count charge of unlawful dealing in Indian hemp.

Counsel to the NDLEA, Mr Raphael Himinkaiye, told the court that Oloye and Oladiti committed the crime on March 10 and 15, 2018 respectively at the Tipper Garage, Ologuneru and Ikeere village, in the Akinyele area of Ibadan.

Himinkaiye further stated that the first convict was caught in possession of 400 grams of the substance, while the second convict was apprehended with 900 grams of the illicit drug.
