The role of women in nation building cannot be overemphasised because women have been relegated to the background on issues of development, especially in Nigeria.
Programme Convener and National President of Excellent Women International (EWI), Amb. Christabel Okoye, stated this at the opening of a two-day workshop in Abuja tagged, “Women in Leadership, Roles in Economic and Nation Building’, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and the National Orientation Agency (NOA).
Ambassador Okoye said women had always been playing leading roles in shaping Nigeria and had also played active part in businesses and administration of communities.
Amb. Okoye said although recently women had become actively involved in Nigeria’s politics, nevertheless, they were still facing challenges that limited their chances and sometimes had psychological effect that killed their morale.
She said the world could be a different place if women were in charge, and saluted courageous women in Nigeria like late Dr. Dora Akunyili, Dr. Becky Enenche of Dunamis and Amb. Gwamma Ja’afaru Ahmed, National President PROWA.
