2 dredgers abducted in Ibeju

Suspected militants struck again yesterday at Eleko village in the Ibeju Local Government Area of Lagos State and abducted two sand dredgers.

The two victims were believed to be the manager of the dredging company and a machine operator.

The victims were said to be working at a dredging site in the area at the time of the incident.

Yesterday’s kidnap came barely 48 hours after a similar incident occurred during which a lieutenant in the Nigerian Army was abducted by gunmen at the Abule-Ado area of Lagos.

Sources said that the kidnappers, estimated to be 10 in number, arrived at the area at about 9.30a.m. in two speed boats, shooting sporadically.

According to a source in the community, one of the workers was hit by a stray bullet from the gunmen while trying to escape.

He said: “We were in our various houses when we heard the gunshots. After the dust had settled, we went to the scene of the incident. Unfortunately we found one of the workers in a pool of blood. We rescued the victim and took him to a private clinic in the community for treatment. We later reported the matter to the Akodo police division.”

Meanwhile, a combined team of security operatives comprising policemen and soldiers, City News gathered, have been deployed to Igbodu in Epe to be escorting farm owners and their workers to their various farms. This is to prevent any further kidnapping of farmers in the area.

Over 25 persons have been abducted in Epe in six months, while a yet-to-be-ascertained number of persons have sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attacks.

When contacted, the acting Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Adeyemi Famous Cole, promised to get back to our correspondent.
