Two drivers of Integrated Motor Industry Limited, Lagos, were yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja magistrate court for allegedly in possession of contraband goods and also damaging products valued at N8.53 million, property of Chivita.

The drivers, Amadi Nkechi, 54, and Yusuf Ibrahim, 25, whose residential addresses were not given, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, breach of peace and malicious damage.

The prosecutor, Inspector Aondohemba Koti, said that the accused committed the offences on October 14, 2018 at No. 4/7, Akinyemi Crescent, Matori, Mushin, Lagos.

According to Koti, the two men had been given the Chivita products with instruction to deliver them at offloading ports in Benin and Onitsha.

“The company’s manager received a phone call from men of the Nigerian Customs Service at the Shagamu interchange, Lagos-Ibadan expressway, that the company’s trucks loaded with the Chivita products had been intercepted conveying some contraband goods (rice),” the prosecutor added.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs M. O. Tanimola, granted them bail of N1 million each, with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till November 11, 2018 for trial.
