A Magistrate Court sitting in Normansland has convicted two individuals for illegal tree felling in Kano. The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change instituted the suit in enforcement of environmental protection laws.

Salihu Mukhtar and another individual were arraigned for conspiracy and illegal tree felling along Jigawa Road, Nasarawa GRA.

The prosecution counsel, Barrister Bahijjah H. Aliyu, presented evidence showing that the defendants felled a tree without authorization from the ministry.

This act, he said, violated both the Kano State Penal Code and the Forestry Laws of Kano State.

A statement issued by the ministry over the weekend said that Magistrate Auwalu Yusuf found the defendants guilty of conspiracy and sentenced them to three months imprisonment or a fine of N20,000 each.

Additionally, for illegal tree felling, the duo were jailed for six months or a fine of ₦50,000 each.
