Two persons have been confirmed dead, while 12 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal road traffic crash that occurred in the early hours of Thursday at Oloriegbè community, along the Ogbomosho–Oloru road in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The crash, which involved a commercial Toyota Hiace bus and a DAF trailer, occurred at about 7:10 a.m.
According to an eyewitness who requested anonymity, the commercial bus, with registration number BTR 161 XA and driven by Abubakar Musa, collided with a faulty trailer abandoned on the road without any visible registration number at the time of the incident.
When Daily Trust visited the scene, traces of blood were still visible on the road, while the injured victims had already been rushed to University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and Arewa Medical Centre for treatment.
The remains of the deceased were also deposited at medical facilities.
The Kwara State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Muftau Adebayo Irekeola, confirmed the incident to Daily Trust, attributing the crash to a combination of driver fatigue, speeding, and loss of control.
He disclosed that 19 persons were involved in the accident, comprising 17 adult males, one adult female, and one female child.
Twelve victims—including the female adult and child—sustained fractures and suspected internal injuries, while five others escaped unhurt.
The FRSC commander cautioned motorists against reckless driving, particularly fatigue and excessive speed, urging drivers to ensure they are well-rested before embarking on journeys.
He stressed that strict adherence to traffic regulations remains crucial in preventing avoidable road crashes and loss of lives.
