Two people have been confirmed dead while eight others were hospitalised following an attack by Boko Haram insurgents in Geidam town, the headquarters of Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The insurgents, who stormed the town around 8pm on Monday, attacked a vigilante outpost at Fanfon Nuri, a mini market in Geidam.
Multiple sources from the town told Daily Trust that the assailants killed a vigilante member and a civilian, while eight other people sustained varying degrees of injuries.
“They parked their vehicles in the bush, which enabled them to sneak into the town without being noticed.
“When they stormed the town, their target was the vigilante outpost. A vigilante member was killed instantly, and another civilian who was at the Fanfon Nuri mini market to buy something was also gunned down.
“The eight others sustained injuries while trying to flee the scene for safety,” a resident, who wished to be anonymous, said.
However, another source told Daily Trust that the civilian was not killed directly by the insurgents, but died in the stampede that followed the attack.
Efforts to reach the Assistant Director, Public Relations Unit of Operation Hadin Kai, Sector 2, Damaturu, proved unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
