Hoodlums suspected to be bandits invaded Aiyetoro Kiri settlement in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing two residents in the process.

The hooligans, it was gathered, attacked the town in the early hours of Wednesday, 26th November 2025,  shooting sporadically to scare residents away.

In the process, members of the Kiri Vigilante Group reportedly mobilised swiftly and confronted the attackers. They successfully prevented the hoodlums from kidnapping any residents.

However, one vigilante member was said to have lost his life in the exchange of gunfire that ensued, while a resident was hit by stray bullets.

According to a resident of the neighbouring village who spoke to our correspondent, “The gun-wielding hoodlums came into the town, shooting sporadically, which made people scamper in different directions for safety.

“The local vigilantes cordoned off the flank, preventing them access to the area. In the process, two people were reportedly killed.”

The chairman of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, Hon. Zacchaeus Dare Micheal, confirmed the incident in a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Omofa John, saying, “the bandits attacked, but they were resisted and repelled by our team of security men.”

“Though there were casualties, one hunter and one Hausa man, the Joint Task Force has intensified operations to restore confidence in the area.

“The joint teams of security tactical units and local vigilantes are currently combing the surrounding bushes. A thorough operation is ongoing, and normalcy has been restored to the axis. The situation is under strict monitoring,” he said.

However, the Security Adviser to the Kogi State government, Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd), has debunked the rumour making the rounds that bandits invaded Kiri High School and kidnapped students in the early hours of Wednesday.

 

He urged the people of the state to disregard the story.

 

The Kogi State Police Command’s spokesperson, CSP William Aya, failed to respond to our inquiry as of the time of filing this report.

 

A few days ago, the state was awash with the rumour of an impending bandits’ attack on schools and communities, particularly in Kogi East.
