Two persons—a man and a woman—have died, while about 22 others sustained injuries in an accident involving a container truck in Bwari town.
The incident occurred around 2am on Saturday when the truck, which was heading towards the Kaduna axis, lost control on approaching a roundabout in the town.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the FCT, Tijjani Ilyasu, who confirmed the incident, said the truck was conveying bags of oranges and ginger in addition to 35 passengers.
He said the victims were taken to Bwari General Hospital, where they were confirmed dead, while some of the injured persons were receiving treatment.
Abuja Metro gathered that the driver fled the scene, leaving the truck’s head standing while the container detached and fell onto the road.
A source said the truck had commenced its journey from Lafia in Nasarawa State and was heading to Kaduna through the Bwari-Jere Road when the accident occurred.
Residents who spoke to Abuja Metro blamed the design of the roundabout, saying it had been the site of several similar accidents in the past.
One of them, Usman Nasiru, said there was hardly a week without a serious accident at the location, particularly involving motorists unfamiliar with the terrain.
“The roundabout was built on a lower surface that is not easily noticeable from a distance, especially by first-time visitors. It also occupies a sizable portion of the road, making the carriageway narrow. There is a need to redesign the roundabout in order to save innocent lives,” he said.
The FRSC sector commander said all items conveyed by the vehicle had been handed over to the police division in Bwari.
