A soldier and a civilian were on Sunday killed while trying to rescue an Indian who was abducted by gunmen in Podo area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The state’s police spokesperson, Olugbemiga Fadeyi, who confirmed this yesterday, said one Hassan Mills of Panorama Farm, Mekun, Oke Alaro, Ibadan, was abducted at the entrance of his farm by gunmen who shot sporadically before taking him away into a forest at about 05:00pm on Saturday.

Fadeyi said, “Consequent upon this, a team of Operation Burst which was invited by the company arrived the area and proceeded to the forest and there was exchange of fire. Two corpses: of a soldier and a civilian, were recovered from the forest while an NSCDC personnel sustained a gunshot injury.”

The police spokesman further said effort had been intensified to rescue the victim and arrest the kidnappers.
