Two people were killed and two others sustained injuries after fire razed a part of the High Commission of Canada in Abuja on Monday.

Daily Trust gathered that the fire started some minutes after 11:00 am from the generator house when the power generating plants were undergoing maintenance.

A reliable source who pleaded anonymity because she was not authorised to speak on the issue, told Daily Trust that men of the Federal Fire Service (FFS) were able to put the fire under control.

The area has now been cordoned off and investigators are expected to ascertain the cause of the fire.

“It started from the generator house, not the main building. There is a diesel tank close to the generator house and I think maybe because of the temperature, the diesel tank exploded,” another source who does not want to be named told Daily Trust.

When contacted on the phone, an official of the Canadian High Commission, Demilade Kosemani, declined our reporter’s calls. He didn’t respond to the text message sent to him as well.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday sympathised with the Canadian government, diplomatic community, and all persons affected by the fire incident.

The president, in a statement by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, assured the Canadian authorities of the full support of the Nigerian government in the aid of diplomatic and local staff of the High Commission who were particularly affected by the incident.

President Tinubu prayed for the repose of the departed souls and wished all injured persons a rapid and full recovery.

Meanwhile, a popular plaza around Banex junction in Wuse 2 was last night gutted by fire.

The building with inscription Samsung Plaza was said to have caught fire around 8pm.

The cause of the accident could not be immediately ascertained.
