The Lagos State Police Command said it arrested two armed robbery suspects whose gang it said had been attacking travellers on the Mile 2-Badagry expressway.

Another member of the gang, according to the police, was seriously wounded in the operation.

The arrested suspects were identified as Adigun Ganiyu and Lookman.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, who confirmed the arrest yesterday, said that on Monday at about 10.20pm, a team of policemen from the Okokomaiko police station on surveillance patrol intercepted a gang of traffic robbery suspects at the Cassidy bus stop, Okokomaiko.

Elkana said the suspects, on sighting the police patrol van, opened fire on it.

“The policemen returned the fire. One of the hoodlums was injured and Adigun Ganiyu, 26, was arrested, while other gang members escaped. One double-barrel gun, one live cartridge and two expended cartridges were recovered. One motorcycle used by the hoodlums for the robbery operation was also recovered.

“Ganiyu confessed that their gang was responsible for series of traffic robberies along the Okokomaiko expressway. The suspect is helping investigators with useful information about his fleeing colleagues,” he added.
