2 men charged with stealing N896,000 through phone

Two men, Taiwo Toheeb, 20; and Seun Bamidele, 26; who allegedly stole a man’s phone and transferred N896,000 from his bank account through the phone, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Both defendants, whose addresses were not provided, were charged with conspiracy and stealing, to which they pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Insp. Chekwube Okeh, had told the court the defendants and others at large committed the offences on April 2, at Akala area of Mushin, Lagos.

Okeh said the defendants stole the phone from one Mr Ayokunle Onajule, when he was about to board a bus.

He submitted that the defendants debited Onajule’s account afterwards.

“The defendants used the complainant’s GTB mobile application to transfer N896,000 into one of their personal accounts without his knowledge,’’ he said.

The prosecutor submitted that the complainant saw a debit alert of N896,000 from his account to another account and thereafter went to the bank to find out how it happend.

Okeh said that the complainant discovered in his bank account statement that the defendants made the transfer through the stolen phone, in contravention of Sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Akinde, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N200, 000 with one surety.

She adjourned the case until July 1, for mention. (NAN)
