Two men – 53-year-old Tajudeen Muili and Mukaila Muyideen, 52 – were on Friday docked before an Igbosere chief magistrate’s court, Lagos, on charges bordering on felony, land grabbing and conduct likely to cause breach of public peace.

According to the police from the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (FCIID) Alagbon, 

Lagos, the two men and others still on the run conspired sometime in 2015 to commit felony by unlawfully entering into a parcel of land belonging to Ben Emmanuel Odigie.

The police also stated that the two defendants unlawfully destroyed the structure erected on the land in an attempt to forcefully take over the land and, in the process, conducted themselves in a manner that caused breach of public peace.

The prosecutor, Barrister Morufu Animashaun, told the court that the police waded into the matter after Odigie wrote a petition to the Police Commissioner in-charge FCIID, Mr Hamed Mogaji.

Animashaun further told the court that upon police conclusion of investigation, the two defendants admitted committing the offences and were brought to court.

But in court, the two defendants pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

Following their plea, their lawyer, Mr Gani Olanrewaju, pleaded with the court to admit them to bail in the most liberal terms. Olanrewaju said that the defendants had capable sureties and would not jump bail, if granted.

While not opposing bail, saying that was at the discretion of the court, Animashaun advised that bail terms to the defendants should be made that the defendants would attend their trial.

Ruling on the parties’ submissions, Magistrate O. O. Oshin (Mrs), granted bail to each of the defendants in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in the same sum.

The magistrate, while adjourning the matter till August 8, 2018 for trial, ordered that the two defendants be remanded in prison custody pending the fulfilment of the bail terms.
