The police in Sokoto State have arrested two men while attempting to collect ransom from a community they earlier threatened to attack.

Briefing journalists in Sokoto, yesterday, the police commissioner, Murtala Usman Mani, who spoke through the command’s spokesperson, DSP Cordelia Nwawe, said the two suspects, Umar Abubakar and Aminu Abdullahi, were arrested while attempting to collect a ransom of N300,000 from Dabagin Bum community.

The suspects are said to specialize in calling and threatening their victims through cell phones and demanding for ransom or to face attack.

The command also arrested one Haliru Muhammed suspected to be one of the bandits behind attacks on Tabanni and other villages in Rabah area of Sokoto State.

Daily Trust reports that 39 lives were lost two months ago at Tabanni village following bandits’ attack on the community, which forced the inhabitants to flee their homes.

The police said Muhammed and five others still at large were among those terrorizing Tabanni village and environs of Rabah Local Government. “He used his phone and called the Tabanni village head that he should collect N3 million or they face attack,” he said.
