2 policemen killed, 2 others wounded in clash with soldiers in Jalingo

Two policemen were killed and two others wounded in a clash between soldiers and the police in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, on Monday.

The incident, it was gathered, happened over a minor disagreement between soldiers and policemen guarding the INEC headquarters and resulted in a shootout for over 40 minutes.

City & Crime learnt that the soldiers also invaded the police headquarters located close to the INEC head office and chased away policemen on duty.

It was gathered that the two policemen wounded during the shootout were admitted at the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo.

Three police vehicles parked inside the police headquarters were allegedly vandalised by the soldiers. 

City & Crime reports that the sporadic shootings caused panic among residents causing shops and markets on the street to close.

The police commissioner in the state, Suleiman Amodu, said at a joint press conference that a high-powered investigation panel would be set up to find the root cause of the incident and those involved for sanction.

The Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations, Lt  O. Oni, said that two soldiers were seriously wounded during the incident.

He told City & Crime that the wounded soldiers were receiving treatment at a hospital in Jalingo.

Meanwhile, normalcy has returned to Jalingo as vehicles are back on the streets and some shops have opened but roads leading to the Six Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Jalingo remained closed.
