Vigilantes have arrested two scavengers, identified as Zayyanu Ibrahim and Awwalu Usman, for allegedly stealing iron rods from a house under construction in the Pegi community of Kuje Area Council in the FCT.
Enoch Samuel, a member of the local vigilante group, said the incident occurred on Sunday around 5:47 am.
He stated that the suspects targeted the building while the security guard was away observing Subhi prayers.
According to Samuel, the suspects quietly went to the back of the property to remove two pieces of iron rods.
However, the security guard spotted them upon his return and immediately raised an alarm.
Vigilantes returning from their night patrol were alerted and apprehended the suspects as they attempted to escape.
A crowd of local youths, hearing of the arrest, reportedly attempted to seize the suspects to manhandle them.
One of the suspects was allegedly identified as being responsible for previous thefts of valuables from other uncompleted houses in the community.
“A mob tried to snatch the scavengers from the vigilantes, but they were immediately whisked away and handed over to the police,” Samuel said.
A police source at the Pegi Division, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the arrest.
The source added that the suspects will be transferred to the FCT Police Command after investigation.
