Two soldiers have been killed in an ambush in Magbon, along the Mowe/Ibafo axis in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Monday when unidentified assailants reportedly opened fire on military personnel in the area, killing two and triggering tension across nearby settlements.
A 28-second viral video circulating on social media showed the lifeless body of a soldier being conveyed in a Hilux vehicle, accompanied by some young men.
A security source told Daily Trust that the incident is still under investigation, adding that troops have launched a bush-combing operation to track down the attackers.
“We are still assessing the situation. Security operatives are in the bush as we speak, carrying out clearance operations,” the source said.
When asked about the casualties, the source said he could only confirm one death and one injured soldier, noting that details were still sketchy.
“I can confirm that one soldier is dead, the other is injured. I cannot confirm yet whether the second one has died,” he added.
The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said he would provide details later, while the Army Public Relations Officer at the 35 Artillery Brigade in Abeokuta, Idereghi Samuel, did not respond to calls and messages.
Meanwhile, a viral audio message by Jimoh Owolabi, Chairman of the Ajumoni Progressive Area CDC, dismissed claims of a bandit invasion, saying the incident was an attack on a sand mining site by suspected kidnappers.
In recent days, Ogun State has witnessed reports of alleged bandit activities in some communities, although the Police Command has repeatedly dismissed such claims and arrested individuals accused of spreading false information.
