A Federal High Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, has sentenced two people, Akinrodolu Sunday and George Tobi, for posing as military officers of the United States (US) to scam their victims.

The two were jailed alongside one Oluwajobi Victor on separate charges of fraud brought against them by the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The convicts were among 34 suspected internet fraudsters arrested in different locations in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, on March 8, 2021.

While Sunday and Tobi used to pose as US military officers to lure their victims into online relationships, Olujobi was charged for attempts to defraud people seeking accommodation in the US.

The defendants admitted to the crimes and pleaded guilty when the charges were read to them in court.

In his judgment, Justice Sanni sentenced Sunday to six months imprisonment each on both counts with an option of fine of N300,000 on each. Tobi was sentenced to six months imprisonment with an option of fine of N300,000.

The court also sentenced Olujobi to six months imprisonment with an option of fine of N300,000.

The judge ordered that their vehicles, phones and other items recovered from them be forfeited to the federal government.
