2 women rescued as police engage ‘one chance’ robbers in Abuja

Operatives of the FCT Police Command have rescued two women following a gun battle with suspected “one chance” robbers in the Central Area of Abuja.

The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, disclosed this while briefing journalists on Wednesday, saying one of the suspects sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange.

He said the incident occurred when operatives attached to the Central Police Station, while on routine patrol, sighted a suspicious black Hyundai vehicle with registration number ABJ 371 DZ parked along a deserted road.

According to him, the patrol team, suspecting foul play, approached the vehicle to ascertain the identity of its occupants.

“On sighting the police team, three suspects alighted from the vehicle and opened fire in an attempt to evade arrest,” he said.

Sanusi said the officers responded, leading to the injury and arrest of one suspect, identified as Jakuta Kandoki Ibrahim, while two others fled into nearby bushes.

He said a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of two female victims tied with ropes in the back seat.

“One of the victims disclosed that she was raped by one of the suspects while in the vehicle,” the CP said.

He added that in a follow-up operation, another gang member, Cornelius Abang, who had earlier escaped, was tracked and arrested.

According to him, the victims later identified the suspect as the one who assaulted them.

Sanusi said the suspects are in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
