A 2-year old boy, Godwin Kumfa, has reportedly drown in meme river in the phase 11 area of Lokoja, capital of kogi state.
The incident happened at about 7:30 a.m on Monday, according to reports.
Godwin’s father, Mr Mamtip Kumfa, said he received a destress call from neighbours in the morning that the boy was missing.
Kumfa, who was a security guard at a private school in Lokoja, said he quickly returned home to find his wife searching for his boy.
On inquiry, he said his wife told him that she left the deceased sitting by the river bank while she was collecting sand from the river and returned to find him gone.
“Godwin was left alone by the river bank while my wife gathers sand.
“Later, we found one of his shoes near Arigbede, about 15km downstream from our house, I’m lost. Godwin is my only son”, he said.
The mother of the deceased boy , Mrs Lovina Kumfa, cried uncontrollably, pleading for help and divine intervention.
“I left him just for a while. When I came back, he was gone. Please God, help me find my child”, she said sobbing.
Also, a family friend, Mr Seun Babalola, said they searched the river, but could only find the boy’s shoe downstream, with no trace of him or his corpse.
A similar tragedy was said to have happened at the same river two years ago, involving another young boy, identified as Goodluck Friday.
“Two years ago, a seven-year-old named Goodluck Friday also drowned here. It’s painful.
“We don’t know if it’s natural or something else. Only God knows”, said Babalola.
As at the time of filing this report, efforts were being intensified to recover the child’s remains by locals.
Meanwhile, the state police command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Aya, had yet to confirm the incident as at the time of filing this report.
