Eighteen zonal directors and department heads at the National Primary Health Care Development Agency received “productivity awards” on Wednesday for helping the agency push toward its mandate throughout 2018.

It comes amidst what the agency’s executive director Faisal Shuaib described as “an outstanding year for us.”

NPHCDA remarkably secured commitment  from the Vaccine Alliance to extend support for routine immunisation and is pushing reforms to improve transparency and accountability in its processes.

Shuaib said at the annual awards in Abuja, “Those we are especially recognising are the folks who have gone beyond the call of duty to carry the rest of us on their shoulders.”

This year alone, the agency has coordinated mass vaccination against measles and yellow fever in response to outbreaks.

“The needle for immunisation is beginning to move in the right direction,” said Shuaib. “Children are being protected, and households too.”

Two separate award categorised were reserved: Umar Shehu award for the overall best staff and another for the most outstanding management staff.

“Our idea of a rebranded NPHCDA is one that has competent, dedicated, transparent staff,” said Shuaib.

“The award is reflection of enormous work put in by their colleagues, their directors and other mentors who have worked with them,” he said of the awardees.
