The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition is being sponsored by CWAY Foods and Beverage Nigeria Company Ltd., producers of Tigo milk drink.

Auscar Ikoro, the CWAY’s Brand Communication Director, at a media briefing in Lagos, said the competition was to revive grassroots football.

Ikoro regretted that school football had been neglected in junior private schools, especially in Lagos.

He explained that it was the need to nurture budding talents in the private schools that informed CWAY’s decision to focus on them in a bid to discover those he described as precocious talents.

The director said the winner of the competition would go home with a laptop and the second, two CWAY dispensers with a regular supply of water.

He listed other items to be won to include school bags, stationery and certificates.

Udeme Ekpo, the CWAY’s Marketing Manager, added that the company would endeavour to sustain the competition which, he said, was going to be annual.

He hoped that the competition would be extended to other states in due course.

Ekpo said that the maiden competition would accommodate only males, while females might be considered to participate in subsequent editions.

Wale Oladunjoye, the Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Babatunde Fashola, on grassroots development in Lagos State, urged the sponsors to keep up their good work, describing it as a good initiative.

Oladunjoye noted that the competition would help to identify more talents and develop football at the grassroots, as well as inculcate the spirit of competition among schools.

He was represented by his Personal Special Adviser on grassroots development, Mr Kayode Alagba.
