Twenty-year-old Peter Adeyemi, who allegedly defiled a nine-year-old girl, was on Thursday granted reprieve by a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
He was released on a bail of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Adeyemi, 20, pleaded not guilty to the charge of defilement brought against him.
The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the offence was committed on Sept. 16 at No. 68, Bale St., off Akoko Compound, Orile-Iganmu, Lagos.
She alleged that the accused, who was a co-tenant of the girl’s parents, lured her to his room before defiling her.
“The girl narrated the incident to his mother and the accused was immediately arrested.”
The offence contravened Sections 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused, on conviction, may be sentenced to life imprisonment.
Magistrate Aro Lambo, who granted the bail, said the one of the sureties must be a community leader or a cleric, while the second surety should be a civil servant of not less than Grade Level 14.
“The sureties’ addresses should be verified and should also produce an evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.
The magistrate adjourned the case until Nov. 9 pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions. (NAN)
