More than 200 suspected members of different secret cult groups at the weekend renounced their membership of their confraternities at the Igando area of Lagos.
The ex-cultists, who are mainly secondary and university students, did the renunciation during a 21-day youth conference tagged, ‘Say No to Cultism’, organized by the Saints Gospel Church, Igando.
Some of those who renounced their membership alleged that they joined cult groups in secondary school as a result of peer group influence, while others said that they were conscripted by senior students.
One of them, 19-year-old Ayo, who claimed to have been initiated while in secondary school, said that he joined in the gang’s recruitment drive to initiate young boys and girls. “I regret my action; that is why I want to turn a new leaf,” he added.
Another former cultist, Tayo, 20, said that in his area of residence at Ikotun, Lagos, cultism was the main thing and whoever became a member was regarded as one of the big boys. “But now, I have realised that they were only destroying my future,” he said.
Admonishing the youths, Pastor Jacob Shodeinde advised them not to allow themselves to be used as thugs by politicians during the 2019 general elections.
