At least 200 amateur golfers will compete at the 62nd edition of FirstBank Lagos Open Golf tournament billed to tee-off on Thursday, November 16 at the prestigious Ikoyi Golf and Country Club in Lagos.

The competition which is attracting amateur golfers from 22 states in Nigeria and other African countries will end on Sunday, November 19.

At a press conference which was held yesterday in Lagos to herald the tournament, the CEO, FirstBank, Dr. Adesola Adeduntan, expressed the bank’s commitment to host this year’s edition, saying it has become a breeding ground and platform to unearth young and talented golfers.

“The FirstBank Golf amateur championship is therefore one of the ways by which we demonstrate our commitment to building the legacy not only for golfers but sports entirely.

“This championship has fostered networking and healthy competition among golfers and additionally has provided a steady platform to attract the best amateur golfers both locally and internationally,” he said.

Reeling out the series of this year’s edition, Dr. Adeduntan who was represented by the bank’s Executive Director, Chief Risk Officer, Mr. Olusegun Alebiosu said the championship will start with the corporate golf challenge between 14 teams to raise money for charity. 

“The challenge is part of our SPARK initiative which is Start Performing Art Random Kindness,” he said.

He added that past amateur winners of previous editions who have been promoted to the professional cadre would compete for a N4m prize before the final of this year’s amateur championship. 

The captain, Ikoyi club, golf section, Mr. Wahab Sarumi who described the tournament as one of the oldest in the country, thanked the sponsors for their unwavering support to the development of golf in Nigeria.

“We appreciate you for keeping the tournament with us and we hope that the tournament will continue to grow from strength to strength.

“It is not easy maintaining a tournament for 62 years. I am sure it is probably the oldest tournament in the country,” he said.
