About 200 rural farmers in Abaji area council have been given improved sesame seeds by the Raw Materials Research and Development Council ( RMRDC).
The Director of Technical Development Institute of the RMRDC, Dr Mohammed Bukar, while presenting the seeds to the farmers, said the move was to actualise one of the councils programme titled initiated 1991.
He said the presentation of the seeds was to increase the production of agro-raw materials using improved planting materials to bridge the gap between demand and supply in the nation’s industrial sector.
According to him, the council has been promoting production of crops of strategic importance through the provision of improved planting materials to farmers.
He said such crops included cocoa, tomatoes, orange, fleshed sweet potato, coffee and tea.
The chairman of the Abaji area council, Alhaji Abdulrahman Ajiya, said he was elated by the presentation of the sesame seeds rural farmers in the council.
He said the presentation of the seeds came at the right time while urging the beneficiaries to make good use of the seeds presented to them.
“I believe that if our rural farmers can make good of this sesame seeds presented to them, Abaji area council shall be ahead of other area councils in the production of sesame seeds,” he said.
