Speaking at the official launch of the project in Abuja on Tuesday, Abubakar Bala Muhammed, its convener, said it would bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired during veterinary training in schools and field skills.
He said, “We are looking at getting to train an average of 200 students and about 50 veterinarians who will be job creators
“The programme is driven by practical application as against the theoretical knowledge the current training curricula in universities offer.
“We seek to operate a cross-sectional, inter-disciplinary programme with the engagement of all relevant agencies.”
He called for support from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD); Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO); United States Agency for International Development (USAID); United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), among others.
The Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, representing Niger North senatorial district, who chaired the occasion, said the launch would help to unlock startups difficulties that veterinarians face.
In his keynote address, the dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ahmadu Bello University, Professor Kabir Junaidu, said the COTOG would help to enhance the skills of young veterinary and animal health graduates, to enable them face current and future real life practice challenges.
