‘2,000 teenagers saved from dropping out of school’

NAPEP’s national coordinator, Magnus Kpakol stated this in Maiduguri while flagging off the payment of conditional cash gift to 500 households in 10 local government areas of Borno State under the Poverty Reduction Accelerator Investment (PRAI) Programme by NAPEP.

Represented by Alhaji Zubairu Abdullahi from NAPEP headquarters, Kpakol said PRAI was a programme in which cash was allocated to vulnerable  persons with conditions attached to alleviate hardship faced by a number of households in Nigeria.

The coordinator noted that each of the households would be paid N84,000 to enable them start micro businesses that would ensure continuous flow of income into the households.

“I wish to state that over 2,000 basic school-aged children, who were in danger of dropping out of school, were retained by this project in Borno State. This means that the project has started making the much-needed impact of breaking the intergenerational transmission of poverty from parents to their wards,” he said.

Kpakol called on Borno Government to redeem its pledge on COPE project, which was made at the commencement of the project by providing its matching grant of N72 million to enable additional 500 households to be reached across the state.

“The next phase of the project requires a stronger collaborative effort between the state Poverty Alleviation Agency and NAPEP state office to develop a concept paper and working document from which the state government could request for a substantial financial support from the debt relief gain funds of the MDGs,” he added.
