Shekarau made the appeal in his Christmas and New Year message in Kano on Friday. He also urged Christians to remember the less-privileged in the country and implored both Christians and Muslims to eschew corruption. He said they should help to build “a just, egalitarian and compassionate society where Nigerians irrespective of gender, ethnicity, religious belief or political opinion” could help in nation-building.

The governor urged Nigerians to “embrace the social re-orientation programme by transforming our lives in a positive and constructive manner. We cannot establish the rule of law or build a solid national economic foundation under a reign of indiscipline and corruption,” Shekarau argued.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that though the Christmas festival was peaceful, the country is experiencing acute fuel scarcity. The commodity is now being sold for N600 per gallon of four litres at the roadside as against the official price of N65 per litre.
