The first thing is all the engines available in the CLS are new and provide an improvement in fuel consumption of up to 25 percent compared with the previous models. There is the Blue Efficiency CLS250 CDI, CLS350 CDI engines and the petrol head CLS550. In the U.S., the V8-powered CLS550 will produce 402hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. In Europe, two six-cylinder models will initially be available in January 2011: the CLS350 CDI Blue EFFICIENCY producing 265 hp and the CLS350 Blue EFFICIENCY producing 306 hp and fitted with the ECO start/stop function as standard. The engine range will be extended just two months later with the addition of the CLS250 CDI Blue EFFICIENCY, producing 204 hp. In the ECE consumption cycle, it consumes 5.1 liters of diesel/100 km.

The other new thing is combining light weight and strength. The aerodynamics has also been tuned to it to contribute to the efficiency. In the front suspension, the principle of a three-link front axle with McPherson struts while at the rear lightweight independent multilink suspension are fitted to a subframe as used in the new E-Class- which could be a very good thing. The most important thing to this chassis is the Electromechanical Direct-Steer system: a new steering sensation which they call it. The thing to really think about is how effective this technology is  well prove to be because many have tried something similar but have ended up annoying many drivers.

Then, there are a whole lot of other features like the LED High Performance Active headlamps, new driver assistance systems for enhanced safety and others.
