The agro expo which began Monday has seen many farmers, agro allied companies, and manufacturers of agro machineries, agro research institutes, and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector presenting what they can offer.
The expo helps farmers and other stakeholders to network in areas of common agribusiness interest to sustain the development of the sector.
Senator Abdullahi Adamu, Chairman, Board of Trustee of the Agricultural Foundation of Nigeria, organizers of the expo, lamented that agric sector which once produced “all our food requirement, with a lot left for exports, employs over 70% of our active work force; contributes 40% to GDP has been left to decay and its growth stunted.”
Adamu worried that there are recent emergence of some organizations with the ostensible missions of organizing agricultural trade fairs, but actually engaged in activities that tend to replicate what the foundation is doing, thereby factionalising the show.
“We in the Foundation believe that the solution lies not in merely lamenting the situation, but in taking concrete action to change it. This is why we have chosen to intervene in the on-going struggle to transform our agriculture in a practical way, by initiating and yearly organizing and staging this agric show,” Senator Adamu said.
Various agro companies are taking the opportunity to showcase new technologies which attract the attention of farmers.
Many farmers are sighted examining some of these technologies and asking questions regarding their efficiencies and operations.
The National Agric Show is expected to end today with various awards to farmers and companies who made remarkable impact in the expo and a formal recognition of all the participating states and farmers’ associations.
