In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman and Secretary of Kaduna State chapter of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Muhammed Sani Ibrahim and Dr. Shehu Abdulrahman respectively, they urge Nigerians to participate actively in the electoral process.
“We pray for mercy, unending love and lasting peace in Nigeria, as we go into the general elections, aimed at effective and people-oriented leadership at all levels of government in the nation,” they said.
Commenting on the ongoing health workers’ strike, the doctors said that all members of NMA have continued to attend to patients in all government tertiary hospitals across the nation despite the ongoing industrial action by hospital support staff under the aegis of Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) including nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory technologists among others.
“Our stand remains that government must adhere to international best practices in the health sector so that all Nigerians can enjoy access to quality health care services without disruption and without having to resort to medical tourism,” they stressed.
The doctors also called on security agents to unravel the mystery behind the death of the Head of Paediatrics at the Federal Medical Centre Owo, who was found dead in his clinic, Universal Medical Clinic Akure in Ondo State, after it was razed by fire on Christmas eve last year.
In a condolence message to NMA in Ondo State and the family of the deceased, the doctors said, “This, again is another acid test of the investigative capacity of our security forces.”
