A non-governmental organization in Abuja, SING Foundation has called for sustained efforts to ensure active participation, credible and violence-free elections in Nigeria in the upcoming 2019 general elections. 

Director of Policy of the Foundation, Mr. Olufemi Lawson, made the appeal yesterday in Abuja at the official launch of “Vote A Must Campaign”.

In his speech,Lawson noted that mass participation is crucial to credible election, thereby calling on Nigerians to participate actively and independently in the 2019 general elections.

He observed that election violence undermines mass participation, adding that security of lives and properties must be top priority of the government to give people a discernible sense of security.

Lawson expressed concern over killings and harrasement that marred the just concluded primaries accross the nation especially in Zamfara and called on government to avert the reocurrence in the 2019 general elections.

“It is by prosecuting these actors of electoral violence that those who lost their lives and affected communities will feel the sense of justice”.

In her remarks, Dr Turner Itari, Director of Research of the Foundation said the campaign is a clarion call on the people to take their destiny into their own hands, using their votes to kick-start the process of accountable and people-centered leadership that recognizes the office of the citizen in all its plans and programmes.

According to her, the 2019 elections presents an opportunity for the citizens to speak in a loud voice as the start of a process-based transformation of the region to take its rightful place as a center of development.
