As the 2019 general elections draw near, politicians have been urged to carry Nigerians along in whatever they do, as well as take note of the challenges they might encounter as well as consider the interests of the electorate.
This call was made by a lawyer and human rights campaign veteran, Miss Idayat Hassan, Director, Center for Democracy and Development today during the #DailyTrustTV livestream on the topic “2019 election: Matters Arising”. She said politicians should convince Nigerians in terms of what they have on board, what their plans are, what they are offering.
“They should go beyond campaign promises,” she said.
She added “If you have delivered well to your constituency, why should you be bothered about which election should come first or last? Because you’re certain that you will be well rewarded.”
Speaking further on electronic voting, Hassan said “Electronic voting is something people have yearned for, and also diaspora voting but the reality is that Africa is the only continent that technology has become the most deplored in its elections”.
Citing U.S as an example, she added that “There is nothing as electronic voting as at now. People vote wherever they are but nobody votes electronically”.
“While we try to use technology, we should not only take cognizance of the challenges that are attached to it but we should also study history and cases from other countries,” she said.
