The Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) has expressed optimism on the commitment of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct credible general elections in 2023.

The National Treasurer of TMG, Tijjani Abdulkareem, who stated this at a training workshop with stakeholders towards the forthcoming elections in Kano, assured of collaboration to address the challenges of security, logistics and technical issues around the electoral process.

He said the group was partnering with INEC to address “bottlenecks” capable of disrupting the smooth conduct of the 2023 general elections.

On his part, the officer in charge of voter education at INEC in Kano, Garba Ashiru, while delivering a lecture titled: “Voting and Result Transmission Process under the Electoral Act 2022 and Understanding BVAS and its Application”, said the commission had introduced measures to address citizens’ previous fears of massive doctoring and falsification of election results.

Ashiru noted that where there was a system malfunction beyond 2:30pm on the day of elections a provision shall be made for voting to continue the following day and that the commission had been given the mandate to cross-check results submitted within seven days to rectify any problem unlike in the past where all result-related issues were challenged in the court of law.
