The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the YIAGA Africa, a civil society organization, have moved against voters’ suppression in Nigeria.

The organizations said that the ongoing constitutional amendment and the electoral legal framework should capture sanctions for voter suppression either by state or non-state actors.

Speaking in Abuja at a round table on tackling voter suppression in Nigeria organised by the YIAGA Africa under ‘Watching The Vote’ campaign, the INEC National Commissioner, Prof. Anthonia Okoosi-Simbine, said all stakeholders need to be involved in the fight against voter suppression.

She said, “Some are intentionally done in certain areas to scare people from coming out. Whether they are intentionally or contrive, it is still voter suppression. Previous elections have shown that the commission, more than ever before, must increase efforts towards improving the electoral process.”
