Yiaga Africa has commenced engagement with students on campuses on political participation for the upcoming 2023 general elections.

It is estimated that not less than 4.5 million Nigerians turn 18 years and above every year, which means that every four years, about 18 to 20 million new voters are ready to be added to the nation’s eligible voting population.

The programme, tagged ‘Discussion on Youth Civic Engagement: The Role of Youth in Decision-making and the Prospects of Increased Youth Political Participation’, formally commenced on Tuesday at the University of Abuja main campus, Gwagwalada.

It was organised by Yiaga Africa and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

Officials of the civil society organisation said the realisation that students in campuses form the majority of prospective voters means that the students should be encouraged to register and participate in the nation’s political landscape.

Speaking during the programme, a lecturer with the University of Abuja, Dr. Ernest Ereke, said students should “get more awareness on political participation”.
