As the countdown intensifies for the 2025 edition of Africa’s premier polo showpiece—the Access Bank-UNICEF Charity Shield Polo Tournament—over twenty elite teams from across Nigeria are set to converge at the iconic Fifth Chukker Polo & Country Club in Kaduna. The prestigious tournament gallops off from May 22 to June 1, 2025.
Celebrated as one of the world’s leading charity polo events, this year’s edition promises ten thrilling days of action-packed matches. The opening week will see teams compete for the Access Bank Cup and the Usman Dantata Cup.
The grand finale will feature fierce competition for the UNICEF Cup, the Herbert Wigwe Memorial Cup, and the tournament’s most coveted prize—the Charity Shield.

Dedicated to raising awareness and funds for vulnerable children and orphans, especially Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across northern Nigeria, the event aligns with UNICEF’s broader humanitarian goals. This year’s edition will again celebrate Children’s Day on May 27 with special activities and outreach programs.
Fifth Chukker, in collaboration with Access Bank and UNICEF, has reaffirmed its commitment to using polo as a platform for change. Proceeds from the event—including gate takings, souvenirs, and an additional N10 million donation by Access Bank—will support healthcare, education, and life skills training for orphans and vulnerable children.
The three-phase tournament, which continues in the UK and South Africa later in the year, will also host the second edition of the Herbert Wigwe Memorial Cup, commemorating the late banker’s legacy of philanthropy and impact.
