Some stakeholders in the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have insisted that the party’s governorship ticket for 2027 should go to Kwara North.
They further threw their weight behind the senator representing the district in the National Assembly, Sadiq Suleiman Umar as their preferred consensus candidate.
The development comes amid growing moves within the APC to promote consensus ahead of the 2027 governorship primaries, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive.
After the meeting with the president on Thursday, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq explained that the move was to reduce internal contestation and strengthen party cohesion.
Addressing a press briefing on Saturday under the auspices of the APC Elders Caucus in Ilọrin, the group urged the leadership of the party at both state and national levels to adopt the senator as its flag bearer.
They called on other aspirants from the district to rally behind Umar, saying a united front was crucial to strengthening the region’s chances in the unfolding succession contest.
Chairman of the caucus, Chief James Bamisaiye Ayeni, said the position followed consultations and assessments of aspirants from the district.
He insisted the group found Umar best placed to carry the party’s banner.
“We have come to the conclusion to endorse Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar’s aspiration based on our findings after engaging aspirants from the senatorial district,” Ayeni said.
According to him, the decision was rooted in the caucus resolution that the governorship should return to Kwara North in the next dispensation.
He described Umar as possessing the humility, competence, experience and broad acceptability required for the office, adding that his record in public and private service distinguished him among other contenders.
“We would like to recommend Senator Umar to the leadership of our party to be considered and adopted as the consensus candidate of the party from Kwara North,” he said.
Ayeni urged other aspirants from the district to place collective interest above personal ambition.
He said unity of purpose would be critical to achieving the region’s aspiration.
Daily Trust reports that those at the briefing included Senator Ahmed Mohammed, retired General Agbabiaka, former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Salman Jawondo (SAN), former Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Abdulmumin Sidiq Katibi, and retired Permanent Secretary Samuel Ayobola among others.
