The Arewa Citizens Parliament has said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has indirectly strengthened the political position of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement signed by the National Leader of the group, Saidu Jibrin, the ACP said Atiku’s long-standing presidential ambition and influence within opposition politics had contributed to divisions among opposition parties and coalitions over the years.

The group stated that Atiku has remained active in presidential politics for decades, moving across political parties and playing major roles in coalition discussions and opposition realignments.

Jibrin said Nigerians were expecting opposition leaders to place greater emphasis on unity and collective political engagement at a time when many citizens were concerned about economic hardship, insecurity and other national challenges.

According to him, opposition coalition efforts ahead of 2027 should focus more on building broad-based cooperation capable of presenting a strong alternative platform.

“The political atmosphere in the country requires opposition leaders to work together in the interest of national development and democratic growth,” he said.

The ACP argued that coalition talks within opposition circles have often become centred around individual presidential aspirations, leading to disagreements among stakeholders.

The group referenced developments within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2023 elections and said similar concerns were beginning to emerge in ongoing coalition conversations linked to the 2027 polls.

It also commented on discussions surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which some opposition figures are reportedly considering as a possible platform for broader political cooperation.

According to the ACP, political leaders should focus more attention on issues affecting Northern Nigeria, including insecurity, unemployment, poverty, drug abuse and declining agricultural activities.

Jibrin said younger political actors and professionals should also be given greater opportunities to contribute to leadership and national development.

“The country needs inclusive politics, strategic thinking and cooperation among leaders across different regions and generations,” he said.

The ACP called on political stakeholders, youth groups and civil society organisations to support efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
