A member of the House of Representatives from Kano State and leader of the Northern caucus in the Green Chamber, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has said loyalists of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari will continue to “speak truth to power” to ensure accountability within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Doguwa spoke on Wednesday in Abuja at the public presentation of a book, Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments that Defined an Administration, written by former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed.
According to him, loyalty to the party does not preclude criticism, stressing that Buhari’s supporters would continue to point out areas requiring improvement so the party does not lose touch with the people.
“We will continue to tell the government and those in power the right thing to do for the people, so that when election time comes, we will not have uncomfortable questions to answer at the polls,” he added.
The lawmaker noted that Buhari died as a committed member of the APC and never renounced his membership, describing this as a significant reference point for his supporters, particularly in the North.
“For those of us in the North, we will continue to identify with the APC and the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because our leader died as a proud member of the party,” Doguwa said.
He added that Buhari’s loyalists within government would strive to uphold what he described as the former president’s legacy of service to ordinary Nigerians, especially the poor and vulnerable.
Doguwa also said Northern Nigeria would remain united politically, with religious leaders and traditional rulers playing important roles in mobilising the people for meaningful participation in governance.
The event was attended by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde; former APC national chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris; former Chief of Staff to Buhari, Ibrahim Gambari; and former National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno (rtd).
Others present included former presidential spokesman, Segun Adeniyi, who reviewed the book, the Emir of Argungu, and representatives of the Sultan of Sokoto and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Makinde rules out defection to APC
Meanwhile, Governor Makinde used the occasion to dismiss speculation about a possible defection to the APC, insisting that he remains committed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite recent defections by some opposition governors.
“I am not APC, and I am not about to become APC,” Makinde said.
He added that Nigeria’s progress depends on sincere collaboration among leaders across political divides, arguing that the country’s deepening divisions are driven more by elite ambitions than by the will of ordinary citizens.
Makinde also warned against a “winner-takes-all” approach to politics, saying it fuels exclusion and undermines national cohesion.
