A coalition of civic organisations, development advocates and grassroots movements in Kwara State has called on the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to present a credible governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The coalition said the appeal followed growing calls for a new political direction capable of addressing the socio-economic challenges confronting the state and repositioning governance for sustainable development.

The groups said Kwara requires leadership with the capacity to combine policy understanding with practical governance experience in critical sectors such as infrastructure, education and economic development.

The coalition comprises the Kwara Development Initiative, Agaka Football Academy, Red Card Movement, Ilorin Gifted Academy and the Nigerian Progressive Coalition.

Speaking on behalf of the groups, the coordinator, Abubakar Abdulhamid, alongside the Assistant Woman Leader, Tajudeen Shifau, said the position was reached after extensive consultations with professionals, youths and community stakeholders across the state.

According to them, the current realities in Kwara demand visionary leadership driven by competence, accountability and people-oriented policies.

The coalition stressed the need for structured economic reforms, improved infrastructure and transparent governance, noting that the state cannot continue with politics driven by personal interests rather than development priorities.

The groups also highlighted youth empowerment, sports development and community engagement as major areas requiring urgent government attention.

They further acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Abdulmumin Yinka Ajia to development discussions in the state, describing him as a respected academic and development theorist with deep interest in Kwara’s growth.

To this end, they appealed to Ajia, an Associate Professor of Business Administration and Marketing at Lincoln University, Missouri, United States, to join the governorship race, citing his academic background and development-focused engagements.

They said “The decision to approach Professor Ajia was born out of a rigorous assessment of the state’s needs.

“Kwara requires a leader who can bridge the gap between policy and implementation, particularly in areas of economic security, infrastructure and education.”

Ajia, a former ADC chieftain, moved with Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the NDC amid ongoing coalition realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

The coalition maintained that the emergence of a credible candidate under the NDC would strengthen the push for inclusive governance and accelerated development in Kwara State.
